【About Grumman F-14D Tomcat】

Thanks to a combination of powerful radar and long-range missiles, the F-14 Tomcat was seen as the greatest carrier fighter in the world from initial deployment in the 1970s until its career ended in 2006. Originally developed with a focus on the fleet defense role, from the 1990s, the Tomcat’s superb range and payload capacity saw this aircraft involved in ground strikes as well. In the second half of the 1990s, the F-14 employed the LANTIRN targeting pod and laser guided ordnance, which allowed precision strikes from long distance. The final F-14D variant inherited the General Electric F110-GE-400 engines and digital radar control system and evolved into a multirole aircraft with strike and reconnaissance roles. The F-14D made its debut in 1992 and saw live action in Afghanistan and Iraq. It supported the U.S. Navy until its retirement in 2006.
