Koshu Inden
The word “Inden” is said to be an abbreviation of “Come from India (Indo-Denrai)” in Japanese.
The craft of applying patterns to deerskin can be seen in items such as the Nara-period bunko box (Todai-ji, a national treasure), and during the Warring States period, it was used to decorate the armor and helmets of warlords. In the Edo period (1603-1867), the founder of Koshu Inden, Uehara Yushichi, invented a unique technique of applying patterns to deerskin with lacquer. The Inden cloth is mentioned in the novel book “Tokaido Chu Hizakurige” (The Tale of the Knee).
As described in the novel book, Inden was loved by people as a chic possession of fashionable people. Along with Fusube(燻) and Sarasa(更紗), the Koshu Inden technique was handed down from generation to generation by the patriarch of the family, “Yushichi”, and is still alive today as a practical beauty that adds color to daily life. As a bearer of the rare Japanese leather craft culture, Indenya will continue to create products that touch people’s hearts, while respecting the sensitivity and traditions of the Japanese people who love nature.

Characteristics of Inden
- Inden has a unique texture that develops as it is used more and more, due to the harmony between the soft and light deerskin and the lacquer, the color of which changes over time.
- Lacquer may lose its luster when exposed to sunlight (ultraviolet rays) for a long time. Lacquer may crack during the process of processing. It may also chip or peel. The same applies if the item is bent or scratched.
- Deerskin leather may have scratches from antlers and other defects, but these will be treated as a sign of its natural state.
- Deerskin may be scratched if the skin is raised or rubbed during use.
- Each piece of deerskin has different skin characteristics, so there will be slight differences in the color tone after dyeing. The color may also be uneven in some areas. Deerskin leather may discolor or fade in sunlight, lighting, or over time.
Cautions and Requests
- The lacquer is completely dried in a shaded room, so there is almost no risk of Dermatitis, however, depending on one’s constitution and other factors, it is possible to get skin allergy in rare cases. In such cases, please stop using the product and consult a doctor.
- In order to preserve the original flavor of deerskin, no special color-fastening treatment has been applied. Therefore, perspiration, water, friction, etc. may change the texture of the leather, and the dye may migrate to your clothes.
Care Instructions
- When wet, do not rub, but pat dry with a dry cloth and hang dry in the shade.Do not use benzene, cleaner, or wax to remove stains or polish.
Indenya products are marked with a warranty mark.
